TORO PARK, Monterey County — October 30, 2026. Monterey County’s Board of Supervisors approved a special use permit for a major Spartan Race weekend at Toro Regional Park, May 29–31, 2026. The approved proposal anticipated more than 5,000 attendees and combined obstacle-course and trail-running events. Its planning record gives Toro-area residents a window into how a large private sports event uses county parkland.
What races were authorized?
The one-time permit covered Spartan Super 10K and Sprint 5K obstacle races along with 10K, 21K and 50K trail events without obstacles. Supervisors approved the permit April 21, 2026, in County file 26-338. The document outlines authorization for that particular event, rather than creating a standing reservation or giving the organizer permanent control of public trails.
How was public access affected?
The event plan provided for building course structures starting May 22 and taking them down by June 3. The county listed the general public’s park closure for May 29–31, and restricted access to certain work areas before and after the event. Most obstacle-building activity was planned for a roughly 5.3-acre grass field near the entrance. These were past 2026 dates; residents should not interpret them as an October closure notice.
Where were spectators supposed to park?
The approved plan called for parking at Laguna Seca and buses to Toro Park for participants and spectators, with limited on-site parking reserved for workers. Organizers were responsible for keeping neighborhood driveways and nearby roads unobstructed and for providing advance notice to nearby residents.
Did the public pay for everything?
The county’s agenda states that county expenditures supporting the event were to be reimbursed by Spartan. The board report does not by itself prove the final reconciliation or total cash received after the race, and California58 is not representing projected permit charges as an audited net revenue figure.
